There's one place, though, where we do think it's worth going natural. Babies spend around 70% of their time sleeping. They need this time to rest and grow. And when they're sleeping, they're breathing in whatever is in the environment around them. So when you read, as I did, that most conventional mattresses contain some substances that have been banned in Europe, and others which are used in roach killing sprays, you've got to think twice. I mean, that doesn't make sense on any level. On the one hand you've got these precious, highly sensitive sleeping babies, and on the other you've got a mattress with some very strong and obviously toxic chemicals. So why am I writing about this? Well, it turns out that there is an alternative. You see, these mattresses have these chemicals in them because they burn so well. They have to have strong fire retardants in them to pass fire safetly regulations. In fact, they burn so well firemen call them 'solid fuel.' The only way they'd be legal is if their foam is impregnated with Boric Acid, Antimony or PBDE's. (strong fire retardants.) Now fire safety is important, but surely it doesn't make sense to make mattresses fire safe with potentially harmful chemicals? After all, it's your baby's health that we're trying to protect. However, there is another side to this story. While synthetic mattress companies have found ways to solve their fire safety problem by creating another chemical problem, I looked and found one company that had an entirely different approach. Naturebeds Ecobaby mattresses pass all the US fire safety regulations AND contain no strong chemicals. In fact, they are one hundred percent natural.
How do they manage this? It comes down to an old secret: one of the olderst fabrics known to mankind...wool. In the old days, firemen's coat linings were made from wool. Racing car drivers wore wool racing suits. They did this because wool is a fantastic natural fire retardant. So using wool in your mattress lining will provide the necessary fire safety to your baby's crib. As well as this, Naturebed's mattresses contain only organic cotton. Why? Because all natural cotton is not only healthier but it's also safer than synthetics. Cotton as a bedding creates a dry clean breathing environment for your baby. So while it's possible to get a synthetic mattress for your baby, we recommend going all natural and organic. After all, it's a sure bet to give your baby the safest start in life.
