There are many types of mattresses - coil mattresses, memory foam
mattresses, latex rubber mattresses.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and a lot depends on personal
preference. Firstly - an explanation of coils, coil count and spring mattresses.
Coil Mattresses use coils of metal like springs to create the cushioning effect
for the mattress. Usually the coils are round, like a normal spring. The number
of coils in a mattress is called the coil count.

All mattresses will have a specified standard coil count for that size of
mattress. Some companies put more coils in their mattresses. This has the
effect of a firmer mattress. The thickness and type of metal also has an effect
- eg. a 180 coil count mattress may be firmer than a 220 coil mattress if the
steel used is thicker and less springy.
There are three main types of mattress springs - hourglass-shaped,
continuous-coil and pocket springs. They all have different benefits.
In general, continuous-coil springs maintain their shape longer. However, they
are interlinked. This means that they transfer movement more easily - you are
more likely to be disturbed by your partner's movement.
Hourglass springs don't transfer movement as easily. However they are not as
durable as continuous coil springs.
Pocket springs are contained in their own "fabric pocket." The springs are all
seperate from each other. This means that very little movement is transferred.
They have been known to lose their shape after time.
Elliptical coils are shaped like an elipse, or oval. Their main advantage is that
they don't form a magnetic field as easily as round springs. (For those people
worried about these things.) They are also considered by many to be more
comfortable than conventional springs.
Personal preference plays a large part in what type of mattress people like. The
main things to look for is that the mattress is made of quality materials and
the 'rest test' is essential. That is - do you wake up feeling well rested?
